To the "locals" Chincoteague Island is just another town on our fare shore that we sometimes forget as being a unique treat. By the time summer rolls around, we soon remember just what all the fuss is about. Visitors from all over the country come to visit this small yet intrigueing island. Its not everywhere in the Country you have the ability to see such abundant, protected wildlife roaming free. While enjoying your stay on the island, take a drive to the expansive beach on Assateague. The most famous attraction the island offers, is the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim - put on by in July by the Saltwater Cowboys to benefit the Chincoteague Fire Department.
